Albany -- A retired Dougherty County school principal announces her candidacy for the State House seat currently held by Lawrence Roberts.
With dozens of her family and friends by her side, Freddie King Powell announced she will run for the District 135 House Seat. This is King's first time running for office, but she has worked in the campaigns for Lt. Governor Mark Taylor and Senator Michael Meyer Von Bremen.
Powell said she is running to give Albany effective representation in Atlanta. King-Powell said "I want to focus on the issues. The issues of preserving the HOPE scholarship, affordable health care for everyone, equitable taxation. Those are the things I would like to focus on."
The election primary will be held July 20th.
Lawrence Roberts has held the District 135 seat for 12 years.
