Hometown hero

January 27, 2004

Albany-- Well before Deion Branch went on to become a star receiver for the New England Patriots, he was an undersized wide out and defensive back for the Monroe Tornadoes.

Branch starred for Monroe from 1993-1996, where he helped lead the Tornadoes to the second round of the playoffs his senior year. Former Monroe head coach Vernorris Bradley was an assistant under William Chunn during Branch's playing days.

He says Deion offered him Super Bowl tickets earlier this week but he regretfully had to decline. And although he won't be in attendance Bradley says he and the entire Monroe community will be rooting on their hometown hero come Sunday.

"I think everyone has really kind of adopted the New England Patriots as being their team. I think there's probably two or three real Patriot fans here, my nephew being one of them, but beside that I think New England is the team for people in this area," Bradley said.

Bradley says he and several coaches have already made plans to watch Super Bowl 38 on Sunday.
