Lake Park pet store quarantined

January 27, 2004

Lake Park - The Georgia Department of Agriculture is investigating a possible outbreak of a bird infection in South Georgia.

Several birds and workers at Discount Pets in Lake Park have become sick with flu like symptoms consistent with Psittacosis. The store has been under quarantine since last Friday.

The disease can be transmitted to humans, but usually isn't too severe. "The symptoms are a lot like the influenza virus, achy muscles and headache, but it usually doesn't become too serious," said Dr. Lynne Feldman.

Psittacosis most commonly infects parrots, parakeets, macaws and cockatiels.
