(Raleigh, North Carolina-AP) -- Scooter Sherrill scored 18 points and Ilian Evtimov had eleven points and 14 rebounds to lead North Carolina State to a 76-to-72 victory over No. 11 Georgia Tech today.

The Wolfpack (11-4, 4-1) improved to 10-0 at home and grabbed sole possession of second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference behind top-ranked Duke.

Will Bynum scored 17 points for Georgia Tech (15-3, 3-2), which lost its eighth straight game at N-C State. The Yellow Jackets' last victory in Raleigh was a 76-to-71 decision on January 24th, 1996, during Les Robinson's last season coaching N.C. State.

Georgia Tech battled back from a 16-point deficit in the second half to cut it to 54-to-52, but Sherrill got loose for a layup and Levi Watkins made a three-pointer to help hold off the Yellow Jackets.

Evtimov also made two free throws with seven-point-nine seconds remaining to provide the final margin. Marcus Melvin had 18 points and 12 rebounds for NC State, which was 12-of-41 from three-point range.

The Wolfpack jumped on the Yellow Jackets early, going on a 12-to-two run to open up an eight-point lead. Cameron Bennerman converted the last of the Wolfpack's seven first-half three-pointers right before the halftime buzzer to give NC State a 41-to-31 lead.

BJ Elder and Jarrett Jack had nine points in the first half as the Yellow Jackets shot 42 percent from the field.
