Woman survives collision with log truck

January 19, 2004

Clyattville - It's a miracle anyone in this car is still alive, but the driver, 74-year-old Rosa Grover, is still hanging on. "It's a miracle from God, that's all it could be," said Mitch Cothran, Witness.

Cothran was one of the first people on the scene. "I've never seen anything like this," said Cothran. "The car was actually pinned between the tree and the truck."

Witnesses say the driver of a Ford Focus pulled out onto Highway 31 from Nankin Road, right into the path of a log truck. "She was trapped inside and we had to get the jaws of life to get her out," said Cothran. "Then we had to cut her seat belt off."

The impact was so great, the motor from the Focus was thrown across the road. Traffic was detoured around the scene for more than three hours as crews cleaned up the mess of logs and kept leaking gas under control. "We had a diesel fuel leak, but we had firefighters keeping watch on and cleaning up the spill while they were extricating the victim," said Billy Young, Clyattville Assistant Fire Chief.

The driver of the log truck, 75-year-old Herbert Rister, was able to crawl out of the truck and was not seriously injured. Grover is still critical.
