Fire breaks out at vacant warehouse

January 9, 2004

Tift County- Firefighters responded to a fire at the old Sogreen warehouse in Tift County around 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon.

When they arrived the warehouse was engulfed in flames. It used to house flue dust, an extremely hazardous material made of zinc, lead, cadmium, and chromium.

A nearby school was evacuated while fireman extinguished the flames.

The Environmental Protection Division ordered the site to be cleaned up several years ago. That clean up is still on-going.

The building had no electricity and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
