Americus-- A Sumter County jailer is fired for letting an inmate escape during a hostage situation over the weekend.
On Saturday, 17-year-old Leon Sims overpowered a female jailer in the booking area of the Sumter County Jail, beating her and threatening to kill her.
Another jailer, Joe Bruce, walked in on the attack. Sims was threatening to break the female jailer's neck if he wasn't let loose, so Bruce let him go.
Now, Bruce has been let go as well from his job at the jail. A Peer Review Board made the decision Wednesday, saying Bruce failed to follow policy and procedure. He was also cited with violating his oath of office.
Bruce says he was only trying to save the female jailer's life.
