Albany-- They save lives and fight crime, and Monday, some Dougherty County pubic safety workers were honored for their service.

County Police Chief Don Cheeks named 17 year veteran Lieutenant Dennis Dawson the Officer of the Year, and Alanda Webb the Dispatcher of the Year. Webb has won the award each of her two years on the job.

Sergeant Eric Hermann was also honored as the police High Shooter of the year. On average, he is nearly 100-percent accurate at the pistol range.

"In almost 18 years, I've never had to use my weapons and hopefully I'll never will. But, it's good to know how," Hermann said.

"Dispatchers are the initial person to get the phone call, to get people the help they need, and to calm them down. So we are important there," said Webb.

The county also named Jo Williams and Sidney Reynolds the EMS Crew of the Year, and Cedric Gorden the Part-Time EMS Employee of the Year.

Fred Taylor was honored for 33 years with EMS. He was one of the first three supervisors of the department in the early 70's and is retiring Friday.
