Government bans ephedra

December 30, 2003

Albany- The Bush administration has decided to ban the herbal supplement ephedra. The ruling could take effect in as little as 60 days.

Government officials say the scientific evidence of its harmful effects is overwhelming, but herbal supplement supporters disagree.

They say the government should focus more on educating users about the risks and targeting companies that combine ephedra with other stimulants making the products dangerous.

"It's completely natural. It grows out of the ground, so no it in itself is not a bad thing how you combine it, how you use it that's where the issue lies. If you use it properly it can be very, very, safe," says Kate Simmons of Natural Solutions.

Roughly 155 deaths have been blamed on ephedra. The government plans to publish a final ruling in the next couple of weeks.
