Children's meningitis vaccine scarce

December 19, 2003

Albany-- There are production problems with the drug Prevnar, a common vaccine to protect kids from meningitis and some other infections.

Shipments of the vaccine might be delayed early next year, but the CDC is not changing its recommended four-dose shot schedule for children. That's because there is enough of the drug right now.

Demand for the vaccine last year caused shortages that forced the CDC to recommend limits on the use of the drug until supplies returned to normal.
