(Athens-AP) -- Athletic director Vince Dooley says the University of Georgia will name Damon Evans as its athletic director today -- the first black to hold that position in the Southeastern Conference.

The 34-year-old Evans played football for Dooley in college and will be the youngest athletic director in the SEC when Dooley retires in June. The official announcement of Evans' hiring will come this afternoon. It follows months of controversy surrounding the school since President Michael Adams refused to renew Dooley's contract.

The choice may pacify Dooley's loyalists who are upset that he was forced into retirement. Dooley called the choice of Evans "the right decision, a wise decision."

He says Evans is respected in the conference. Dooley says the only shortcoming may be his age. Evans is currently the senior associate athletic director under Dooley.
