Albany-- Dawson Mayor Robert Albritten was indicted by the Dougherty Grand Jury Wednesday morning on 21 counts of Insurance Fraud and Forgery. This is a re-indictment of the same charges that Albritten was tried for earlier this year.
The jury acquitted him of seven counts, but deadlocked on 21 counts. Prosecutors say he filled out insurance forms on elderly people in care homes without their knowledge from 1990 to 1994.
"In their review of the case along with talking with some of the jurors from the original case, we wanted to frame the indictment so that we believe the jury that tries it in January will have a better understanding of what occurred, and an easier time we believe in coming to a just verdict," said Dougherty D.A. Ken Hodges.
Hodges said prosecutors considered trying Albritten in federal court, but there was too big a case load. Albritten's trial should be held in January.
