Dougherty County-- The county can now punish pet owners for not taking good care of their pets or for letting them roam free.

County commissioners unanimously passed a new animal control ordinance today. The new law allows the county to impound dangerous animals.

And, pet owners can be fined for not providing proper food, water, and shelter for their pets.

County leaders say the enforcement will be complaint driven. The county also plans to build a new animal shelter that will be run by the Humane Society and hire two animal control officers to handle complaints.
