Group raises money to renovate old school

December 14, 2003

Newton- The East Baker Historical & 21st Century Community Corporation is restoring the old East Baker High School.

Saturday night, the group held a banquet to raise the money needed to turn the school into a community resource center.

"So often so many of the schools that become abandoned are of no use to the communities or to our society in general, but what they are doing here in Newton and Baker County is a wonderful thing to provide this community with a different resource," says State Representative Winfred Dukes.

"What we envision is something that the entire community will feel they are a part of and will use," adds Shirley Sherrod, CEO of East Baker Historical and 21st Century Community Corporation.

This is the second annual fundraiser for the group. They hope to raise enough money to support recreation programs and services for the youth and elderly.
