(Abilene, Texas-AP) -- Texas is expected to replace Georgia this year as the nation's top pecan-producing state. Scott Jennings of the Texas Pecan Growers Association says the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that Texas will harvest 70 million pounds of pecans this year.

Texas is expected to surpass Georgia, which is usually the top pecan producer. In Georgia this year, heavy rains caused a fungus to attack the crop.

In Texas, the harvest started in September and ended the week before Thanksgiving, when the demand for pecans peaks.

According to the Texas Pecan Growers Association, pecan prices are up this year, fluctuating from about $1.50  to $2.50 per pound for in-shell pecans, and from $4.50 cents to $7.50  per pound for shelled pecans.
