Runoff held for election oddity

November 25, 2003

Ocilla- 86-year old Rebecca Baltes died just 24 minutes after the polls opened on election day. Her absentee ballot tied the votes at 65 for candidates Tyron Smith and Allen Smith.

Election officials are hoping all the commotion will bring more of the 388 registered voters in the district out to the polls. They are expecting at least a 70 percent turnout.

130 people voted in the November 4th election. At 5 o'clock Tuesday 70 voters had already cast ballots. 111 people voted in advance.
