Fuel tanker overturns in Willacoochee

November 24, 2003

Willacoochee - Dozens of people had to evacuate their homes Monday morning after a fuel tanker overturned. "We've got local fire and police departments, the EPA, EMS crews, and everyone is working to get this under control," said John Brown, Willacoochee Police Chief.

Hazardous material crews struggled to clean up more than 10,000 gallons of gas spilling out onto Highway 82. "Right now we're trying to get the gas into another tank, and seal off the leak," said Brown. "We've got to move fast or this could be bad."

The driver of the truck was driving down Highway 82 and attempted to turn north onto Highway 135 when he lost control. "It looks like he was just going too fast, and when he made the turn he rolled over and the tank slammed against the pavement," said Brown. About two miles of Highway 82 were shut down and D.O.T. workers rerouted traffic around the accident.

All homes and businesses within a mile radius of the truck were emptied. Kourtney Gaskin awoke to a loud knock on her door. "They told us we needed to get out fast, and I was scared so we just put on our clothes and went to my grandmother's house," said Gaskin.

The driver of the truck, whose name has not yet been released, was treated for minor injuries at Coffee Regional Medical Center.

Emergency crews continued to work all day, and hope to have Highway 82 reopened by 6:00 tonight.
