Plains-- A popular former Mayor of Plains was killed in a car wreck today. L.E. Godwin, known as "Mr. Pete", died when he collided with a truck at Highway 280 and State Route 45 in Plains around eight this morning.
Godwin served as Mayor from 1971 to 1975. Colleagues describe him as a progressive mayor who modernized the sewer system in Plains when many towns did not. Godwin is survived by his wife Ruth and three children--including his son Boze Godwin, who is the current Mayor of Plains.
