Frankfort, Ky- The Albany State volleyball team bounced back from a 3-1 loss to Kentucky State to beat the Thorobreds in two consecutive matches to win the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball title.
The Lady Rams, who were 8-0 in the SIAC's eastern division, knew that Kentucky State, 8-0 in the west, would be their main challenger to the title.
After opening with easy wins over Benedict and Clark Atlanta on Wednesday, the Lady Rams lost 3-1 to Kentucky State.
Albany State dropped into the elimination bracket where they easily beat Clark for a second time to earn a rematch with the Thorobreds.
Albany State then beat Kentucky State 3-1 (30-27, 30-18, 27-30, 30-15) to force a second and deciding game for the title.
The second and deciding match was close early with Albany State winning game one 31-29 followed by Kentucky State winning the second game by the same score.
But in their third consecutive match, Albany State did not tire. The Lady Rams won the next two games 30-21, 30-20 to claim their third straight conference title.
Albany State setter Erica Nepote, the most valuable player in the SIAC this season, had 89 assists in the final two matches against Kentucky State.
Outside hitter Janel Herring had 38 combined kills and middle hitter Eshovo Amune had 34 kills in the final two matches.
