Closing Marine Base golf course causes protests

November 13, 2003

Dougherty County -- The Commanding General of the Albany Marine Base says closing their golf course has been one of his most controversial decisions.

The Twin Oaks Golf Course on the base will be closed December 31st. Major General Harold Mashburn says the fallout from the golfers has been dramatic, and  plentiful. "The whining, as I like to say. I understand their concern. But it's a business case decision."

The golf course was losing ten thousand dollars a month to maintain.

Major General Mashburn says South Georgians should not too concerned the Albany base could be eliminated by Congressional cutbacks in 2005. He says the Base's operation is too relevant to be changed.
