Albany - Less talk and more action. After years of discussing consolidation, the Albany-Dougherty County Governmental Commission is hiring a consultant.

And as early as January, committee members will find out if consolidation a good idea. Committee Member Dr. Ira Roth says the commission wants Del Delaper and Associates, of Athens, to study the economic benefits of unifying city and county services and governments.

Consultants say they plan to scrutinize four areas - public works, public safety, human resources, and finance. They will interview department heads and city and county managers to determine if a duplication of services is costing taxpayers money.
