Albany--The Albany State Golden Rams may not be in the drivers seat of the SIAC standings, but they definitely have a hand on the steering wheel. With a win this weekend over Fort Valley State in the Fountain City Classic and a Kentucky State loss to Tuskegee, the Rams would claim their first conference crown since the 1997 season.
A win over the Wildcats Saturday could also help the Rams position in the final NCAA Division II South Region Poll. In Monday's poll, the Rams climbed three positions to sixth. The top four teams in next week's poll advance to the Division II playoffs.
Albany State could also clinch a spot in the December 20th Pioneer Bowl against the winner of the CIAA conference by winning the SIAC. If the Rams do end up winning the conference and also finish in the top four in the South Region Poll, they would then have the option of going into the Division II playoffs or playing in the Pioneer Bowl.
Valdosta State also gained ground in this week's poll. The Blazers climbed from third to second, behind North Alabama, after Catawba lost to Carson Newman. If the Blazers remain second in the South poll, they will play their first round playoff game at home.
The final South Region Poll will be announced Sunday November 16th at 1:00pm.
NCAA Division II South Region Poll:
1. North Alabama
2. Valdosta State
3.Carson Newman
4.Southern Arkansas
