Albany- The Albany State Golden Rams saw their defense and special teams scored 23 points in their 43-15 win over Morehouse Saturday.
The best news came from Frankfort, Kentucky where rival Fort Valley State did Albany State a huge favor by beating Kentucky State 13-10 and pulling the Rams into a first place tie with the Thorobreds in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
After Morehouse scored on a 30 yard Byron Archibald field goal the game's opening drive, Dontreal Williams took the ensuing kickoff 93 yards to give the Golden Rams a 7-3 lead.
But while the Albany State offense was struggling with penalties in the first half, the Golden Rams defense, ranked number one in the nation in D-II, scored two touchdowns.
The first was a 40 yard interception return by William Felton midway through the second quarter.
With just under four minutes to play in the first half, Morehouse quarterback Duwuan Burton was hit by Elliot Bonds and fumbled.
Thomas Outlaw recovered for Albany State and then pitched to linebacker Demetrius Isom who returned it 32 yards and a 24-3 Golden Ram lead.
The Golden Ram offense finally found the end zone with Uyl Joyner scoring on a three yard touchdown run in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter and Kenon Atkins scoring the Golden Rams final points with a four yard touchdown run.
Antonio Atkins led Albany State with 240 yards rushing and Uyl Joyner, who had -36 yards rushing at halftime, finished with 110 for the game.
Albany State (8-2, 5-1) will close out their regular season next Saturday in Columbus against Fort Valley State.
