Cordele--The Westfield Hornets survived a mini-playoff with Deerfield-Windsor and Southland Academy to claim the GISA region 3-AAA title Monday night at Crisp Academy.
In the first game Westfield and Deerfield-Windsor exchanged touchdowns on their opening possessions, which began at the 25 yard line, much like the overtime rules in college football. But after the Knights were unable to score in the second overtime, Westfield freshman Jack Lobertini hit a 20 yard field goal to give the Hornets a 10-7 victory.
The Hornets then advanced to play Southland, who received the bye after winning a coin toss. The Raiders came up empty on their opening drive, giving Westfield a chance to win the region title with a field goal. The Hornets did just that as Lobertini nailed his second field goal of the night, a 33 yarder, to claim the top seed in the region.
Since Southland Academy defeated Deerfield-Windsor during the regular season, they earn the number two seed and the Knights get the third seed. Sherwood Christian Academy is the fourth seed from Region 3-AAA.
Southland will host Riverside Military in the first round of the GISA AAA playoffs Friday night while Deerfield travels to face Augusta Christian.
