Vikettes ready for state

October 22, 2003

Valdosta-  While the Yankees and Marlins are doing battle in baseball's World Series, the battle for state softball titles begins this weekend with sectional play.

All competing teams are hoping to earn one of eight coveted berths in each classification to the state finals next weekend in Columbus.

The fast pitch state sectionals will be played this Friday and Saturday where all competing teams hope to earn one of eight spots into the state finals in Columbus next weekend.

The Lowndes High Vikettes will be one of the top contenders for the AAAAA state championship.

The Vikettes, who lost to Fayette County in last year's state championship game, are coming off a 20 win season this year and have won 51 straight region contests.

After making it to the state title game last year, the Vikettes won't be happy with anything other than a state title this season.

However, Lowndes knows that the road to Columbus will not be easy with the competition that awaits this weekend in the south sectionals.

Lowndes coach Jared Dickey said "There is other teams there that have experience too. You have Starr's Mill that went to the final eight last year, Stockbridge went to the final eight. There are all in the south sectionals and it is not going to be an easy road."

Lowndes' runner-up finish at last year's state tournament has made them contenders this year and the Vikettes know everyone will be gunning for them this weekend.

1st Baseman Kristen Lindsey said "We are really, really looking forward to getting back to that point because this is our senior year and this is what we have worked for. We really hope we can get number one this year."

Shortstop Lauren Rowe said "Everybody expects us. We were preseason ranked in the top two and so alot of people are expecting big things about us so we have got to prove that we can do it."

The AAAAA south sectionals will be played at Freedom Park in Valdosta.

The schedule on Friday has Lowndes playing Jonesboro and Coffee facing Eagles Landing at four o'clock.

At six o'clock, Lee County plays Stockbridge and Tift County battles Henry County. The AAAAA south sectionals will run through Saturday.
