Discussing domestic violence

October 14, 2003

Valdosta - October is "Stop Domestic Violence" month, and people who deal with the issue every day are sharing their stories.

Law enforcement, counselors, and abuse survivors took part in a domestic violence forum at Valdosta Technical College Tuesday. They discussed the traumatic effects of abuse on families, ways to leave an abusive situation, and resources for victims in South Georgia.

Sadly, more than 60 thousand calls were made to domestic violence crisis lines in Georgia last year.

"It's so important that we participate in forums like this and educate other people so we can prevent what happened to me from happening to someone else," said Shirley Moure Hoke, Abuse Survivor.

The forum was sponsored by the Georgia Department of Human Resources.
