Teen hero receives "Courage Award"

October 13, 2003

A Blakely teenager is recognized for his heroics during a May house fire.

You might remember 13-year-old Keion Bryant. He rushed inside a burning home to help two elderly sisters, 72-year-old Bessie Ross and 78-year-old Vera Jackson, who were trapped inside. Ross died, but Jackson survived.

State Fire Commissioner John Oxendine honored Bryant with the Citizen's Courage Award on Thursday. Bryant's act of heroism is even more meaningful since the teen suffers from a life-threatening heart condition and asthma.
