    The rate increased because of seasonal factors, such as the summer job loss among non-contract school workers and temporary layoffs, primarily in manufacturing. There were 60,500 jobs in Albany in June, down by 300, or 0.5 percent, from 60,800 in May. Most of the loss came in state government and the service-related industries.More >>

Albany- Five local gang members plead guilty to a convenience store robbery and shooting. Three of their friends admit helping them.

Eighteen-year-old Mark Hodges pled guilty to shooting the clerk at the Oasis Store on South Slappey Boulevard in May 2002.

Seventeen-year-old Orlando Laster, 16 year old Saderick Blocker, 19 year old Dennis Smith, and 16 year old Terry Daniel all admitted taking part in the robbery. All are members of the C.M.E. Rattlers street gang.

Kwanis Young, 22, 20-year-old Shepperton Lee, and Willie Pratt confessed to helping hide the robbers after the shooting.

All eight defendants will be sentenced later.
