Albany - Members of an east Albany community want to turn an old city building into a fitness center, but the City wants to make some money off the building.
The Jackson Heights Day Care Center closed years ago. In May, community members asked city commissioners to turn the building into a free or low cost health center. But Tuesday, the Community and Economic Development Director suggested the City sell the building, instead of spending money to renovate, equip, and staff the wellness center.
"We have an aging community that could truly benefit from a wellness center," said J.C. Odom, Jackson Heights resident. "We will continue asking commissioners to support the center."
City commissioners will ultimately decide what to do with the building. But, no decision was made at Tuesday's commission meeting.
