Americus Fire gets $200,000

Americus-- In the event of a terrorist attack, Americus will be on the forefront of any response.

The fire department is getting a $200,000 federal grant to pay for a mass casualty trailer. That trailer is equipped to handle one hundred victims.

Americus Fire Chief Steve Moreno says, "Within our region we will be responding if need be to anywhere in that region it could go as far as Spalding County and we can go all over the state that is the requirements of the grant."

The trailer also has an attached Haz Mat unit to clean up dangerous chemicals. The Americus Police Department is receiving $50,000 dollars for homeland security.

    A Grady County project that has been in the works since 2007 is now one step closer to being complete. The conceptual plan for the proposed aquatic center project was recently approved by the Grady County Board of Commissioners.  The plan features an eight lane swimming pool, splash pad, and fenced in play area.

    Grady County deputies are cracking down on illegal dumping. If you have big items that you need to get rid of such as a couch or a mattress, you need to be careful where you dump it, because you could face fines up to $700 dollars. "That's exactly right, it's an ugly site," said Sheriff Harry Young. Young he's had enough of the illegal dumping going on in Grady County. Encouraging his deputies to now hand out tickets instead of warnings.
