Students transform lunchroom into restaurant

September 15, 2003

Hahira - Hahira Elementary Students are excited about lunchtime, and not just because it's pizza day. It's also the grand opening of the Viking Grill. "It's cool, there's football, tennis, and sports stuff everywhere," said Luke Bennett, Student.

The usually bare-walled lunchroom has been completely transformed into a delicious diner. "We've got shadowboxes with sports memorabilia everywhere, a mural painted on one of the walls, and everything we could do to make it seem like a real restaurant," said Susan Brock, Counselor.

They've even added background music. The restaurant is a behavioral modification activity designed to teach students proper manners and social skills in public places. "We've been learning to use good manners in the lunchroom, not just this week, but all the time," said Rachel Thomas, Student.

"We believe that teaching them the proper way to act now will make them better students in the classroom and overall, more successful people in life," said Brock.

So next time you see these kids out at dinner, you can bet they'll be on their best behavior.
