Bainbridge -- A lighting manufacturer will close early next year and lay off more than 150 people. Acuity Lighting Group announced Wednesday that its American Electric Lighting plant in Bainbridge will shut its doors in February.

Chamber of Commerce executive director Ceil Ward said the closing is a major economic blow to the community.

The company will phase out production at the facility beginning late this year. Market competition and costs are factors in the company's decision.

The lighting manufacturer had operated in Bainbridge, under different names, for a number of years, and at one time employed between 300 and 400 people. American Electric Lighting produced lighting fixtures for roadways and parking lots.
