(Valdosta-AP) -- Valdosta State quarterback Barrett Wilkes threw three touchdown passes to lead the Blazers to a 21 to 3 win over Albany State in the season opener for both schools tonight.
Wilkes was 21 for 35 for 231 yards, offsetting a solid performance by Ram quarterback Uyl Joyner who threw for 151 yards and ran for 110 more.
The Blazers, winning their 28th consecutive regular season game, led 7 to 0 at halftime after Wilkes hit runningback Aaron Jenkins from 14 yards out early in the second quarter. Albany State cut the lead to 7 to 3 early in the third on Adrian Arango's 29-yard field goal.
VSU answered on its next possession as Wilkes hit Bama Adams from nine yards out to cap a four-play, 46-yard drive.
The Blazers put the game away midway through the final quarter when Wilkes threw a 13-yard T-D pass to Andre Zellner.
