Albany -- Fall Semester Classes have begun at Albany State University, with a record attendance. The University not only has more students, but better qualified students.

Cory Moss is excited to begin his junior year at Albany State. The political science major from Albany says students today are taking their college time very seriously. Moss said "College is dealing with your life. You are determining what you are going to be, and how high you are going to reach."

The tough economy and tight job market are leading more young people to college. Director of Admissions Robin McDermott said "We have been getting our message out effectively. The HOPE scholarship, more students are looking at higher education in Georgia and staying in Georgia."

Final numbers on the record enrollment at Albany State are not complete yet, but the 500 members of the freshmen class have the highest S.A.T. average in school history, over 940. Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Walter Kimbrough said "I'm excited about having the best educated and prepared freshman class that we have ever had."

This is Albany State's one hundredth year, and Junior Marcee Campbell says they hope to make it their best. "To have all these intelligent young students come in. And they are ready to work and they are ready to learn and ready to have their extracurricular activities, it means a lot to all of us."

Because of the increased number of students, the payment deadline for fall semester at Albany State is August 22nd. Final class registration may be extended because of the increased student body.
