Albany -- An Albany firefighter goes on trial on nine counts of sex offenses against children. 39-year-old Joseph Pait is charged with sexually molesting two girls, ages 5 and 7, over a one-year period.

Pait was arrested in May 2002, and indicted on 5 counts of child molestation and 4 counts of aggravated sexual battery. A Lieutenant and 14-year veteran of the Albany Fire Department, Pait has been suspended without pay since his arrest.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Greg Edwards said his office is dedicated to protecting the community's children. Edwards said "We want to not think that people do this, but it really happens sometimes. We try to protect the interests of the children , as well as everyone else related to the situation. But still try to find justice by bringing out the truth about what happened."

Pait's trial is expected to last until Thursday. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison on each of the nine counts.
