Blue Devils hope to wing it on the ground

August 7, 2003

Tifton- The Tift County Blue Devils did make it to the state playoffs last year but they also won just four games last year.

So, in the offseason, head coach Tommy Seward changed coordinators.

And new offensive coordinator Mickey Weldon is changing the Blue Devil offense to the wing-T.

Coach Tommy Seward said "He has convinced us that it is a good offense. A time consuming offense and a ground game offense with play action passes. That is what I would prefer is to be able to run the ball."

With the graduation of Josh Allen, Josh Bowen now steps into the starting quarterback role with runningback Kelvin Burns expected to be featured prominently in the new offense.

Tommy Flowers has been hired from Thomas County Central to run the Tift County defense that returns free safety Micah Baldwin and linebacker Lynn Bryant.

The offseason changes combined with last year's trip to the postseason has pumped up the confidence level in a Tift County program that has endured some tough times in the last five years.

Coach Seward says "It is a measuring stick for us. We felt like we were progressing in the right direction and a trip to the state playoffs sort of solidifies that move."

Tift County will debut their new offense and defense on August 29th against Rutland High from Macon.
