The unemployment rate in the Southwest Georgia region declined to 8.2 percent in April, down two-tenths of a percentage point from 8.4 percent in March. The rate was 8.8 percent in April a year ago.More >>

Albany - On Wednesday, Dougherty Superior Court Judge Loring Gray heard arguments from the County and the Sheriff over lawyer's fees. Sheriff Jamil Saba is suing the County for eliminating the criminal investigators, crime scene technician, and patrol unit. Now, he wants the county to pay his attorney's fees. But, the County says it shouldn't have to.
"The Sheriff decided to bring forth this suit, so the County shouldn't have to pay for his counsel unless he prevails in this case," said Frank Jenkins, the County's hired Co-Counsel.
"But the Sheriff was forced to sue, when commissioners cut his budget and hurt his ability to provide law enforcement to the community," said Chuck Byrd, the Sheriff's Attorney. "Therefore, the County should pay these fees not matter the outcome of the case."
Judge Gray said he will make a decision on the attorney's fees by Friday. A Judge from outside the county will hear the case August 13th.
