Leesburg, Ga.-- For the second consecutive year, a team from Lee County will represent the state of Georgia in the Dixie World Series. The 13 and under Lee County All-Stars earned that right after winning their second straight state title last week by defeating Valdosta up in Duluth.
Lee County departs for Jackson, Tennessee on Thursday and will face a team from South Carolina on Saturday night. Last year, while playing in the Dixie Youth World Series, Lee County went 1 and 2 in Pascagoula Mississippi.
This year they'll be playing in the Dixie Boys World Series against 11 other teams from the Southeast. Nine of the thirteen players on Lee County's team have been playing together since they were six years old, and they hope that plus last year's World Series experience works in their favor this weekend.
"Just having what they did last year and the experience level of it, they weren't quite as overwhelmed (in the state tournament) this year, they knew a whole lot about what to expect. They felt a little more confident and they just weren't overwhelmed when they hit the field," team manager Charles White said.
"It is unbelievable, because we got to go out there and work hard. We come to practice every day, work hard and give all we got," pitcher Jeremy Sheffield said.
"It's pretty fun, it's a good event for everyone to go through in the families and everything," right fielder Landon Carter said.
In Forsyth Tuesday, the Lee County Dixie Youth team took another step towards a state title by defeating Pike County 13 to 1. They'll play again tomorrow night at 7.
