Albany, Ga.--Tifton native Jake Stewart parred the first playoff hole to defeat Statesboro's Gina Gibson and win the first annual Albany Junior Open Monday.
Stewart and Gibson both finished their round at Stonebridge Country Club at 6 over par. The two then headed back to the first hole for a sudden death playoff.
After Stewart's tee shot landed in the fairway, Gibson hit hers out of bounds, and was forced to tee it up again. On the green in three, Stewart had two putts to secure the win since Gibson had to come out of the bunker and was left with a twenty foot putt to save bogey. Stewart's birdie putt wound up just left of the hole, and the rising junior at Tift County High tapped in for par and the title.
" I was real nervous, I've never won a playoff before. It was my first win out of like five playoffs that I've been in," Stewart said.
The victory was Stewart's second at Stonebridge. Albany's Brandon Anthony finished third behind Gibson. Anthony fired a 7 over 79 on his home course.
