Head Start could be heading toward a change

July 25, 2003

Albany - In less than two weeks Head Start kids will go back to school.

By then, the Senate could pass a bill changing the Head Start program. A House version would allow up to eight states to mix Head Start money with other childhood education funds. Right now, programs get money directly.

Supporters say it will improve academic achievement. Opponents say it will mean larger Head Start class sizes and less parental involvement.

The Senate is expected to come up with its own bill.
