South Georgia kids become city leaders

July 24, 2003

Ray City - Some South Georgia kids got the chance to be city leaders Thursday.

The Ray City youth are learning how hard it is to run a city government. Some posed as police officers, others as paramedics, firefighters, and one even acted as mayor for a day.

Mayor Carl Camon says the program is building the future leaders of Ray City. "It teaches them responsilbity, and how much work goes into being part of a municipality," said Camon.  "These are going to be the people running our town one day, and this will better prepare them for that."

The city life scenarios are part of the Ray City Mayor's Youth Leadership Institute. The children are also taking part in seminars on drugs, gangs, teen pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases.
