Albany-- A huge oak tree fell onto the roof of a vacant house in the 300 block of Mulberry Avenue. The tree fell Wednesday morning during a heavy rain with strong winds.

The years of drought have caused stress in many old oak trees. Now the rains have loosened the soil around their roots, and a number of oak trees have fallen in the South Georgia area.

Scores of limbs and trees have fallen in the last two days during the thunderstorms.

Lightning has caused many interruptions of services. The fire department was called to a utility fire at the intersection of Jefferson and Seventh Avenue. When firefighters arrived, they found the traffic lights not working and power lines down, but no fire.

That was one of dozens of calls Albany firefighters and Water Gas and Light workers report receiving.
