The need for blood escalates

July 9, 2003

Albany - Our area's blood supply is at a critically low level. And, the American Red Cross is begging for blood donors.

The Red Cross only has a 2 day supply for most blood types. They need about 25 people to donate every day at the Albany center to bring the supply back up to a safe level. Typically, only 12 people donate each day.

"In the summer when people are traveling and having fun, more accidents happen. So, more people need blood. But, no one comes in to donate because of their busy schedules, and therefore we have an increase need but no blood to give them," Patsy McMath, American Red Cross.

Only 5% of eligible Americans give blood. If you donate now, you can get a free t-shirt.
