Albany - Should Albany and Dougherty County be consolidated? A new 17 member consolidation study committee met again on Tuesday to discuss just that. The group will decide if unifying the city and county governments and services will save money. The first steps they took were to plan more than a dozen public meetings and to discuss the need for a consultant.

"I definitely think we need the help of a professional," said committee member Gary Smith. "Consultants have been through the trenches and can lead us to making an educated decision about this very important issue."

The committee has a $60,000 budget. Ultimately, voters and the Justice Department must approve the city-county consolidation.
