Medical stockpile to be built in Dougherty

July 3, 2003

Albany-- In case of a terrorist attack or natural disaster, Dougherty County will be the site for Southwest Georgia's stockpile of medical supplies and lifesaving drugs.

"Twelve-hour push packages" are part of the Strategic National Stockpile. They contain pharmaceuticals and medical supplies that will be stored in case of need.

District Health Director J. Paul Newell said "If there were a lot of casualties for example, and local resources were overwhelmed. You'd look for I.V. fluids, respirators, various other materials needed for a medical or surgical response."

Community leaders will meet with state and area public safety officials to set up the National Stockpile site.
