(Brunswick-AP) -- The Georgia State Patrol says a 19-year-old Valdosta man was charged with reckless driving and two counts of vehicular homicide in the death of two lifeguards.
Jonathan Gonzalez, who was recovering from the June 25th crash, was charged Tuesday. He remained in stable condition at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center.
Patrol officials say Gonzalez was the driver of a sport utility vehicle that veered off the road and struck an oak tree on Jekyll Island. The SUV burst into flames, killing passengers 18-year-old Priscilla Boone, of Darien, and 19-year-old Randolph Day of Tifton.
State trooper Brian Scott says the State Patrol's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team, based in Reidsville, was investigating the cause of the crash. Boone, Day and Gonzalez were lifeguards at Jekyll Island's Summer Waves, a water park on the state-owned resort island.
Gonzalez must report to jail following his release from the hospital.
