July 1, 2003 Tifton-Georgia smokers are now digging deeper in their pockets to buy cigarettes.
The tobacco tax increase that Governor Sonny Perdue pushed through the General Assembly went into effect today. Each pack of cigarettes now includes an extra 25 cents, bringing the total tax to 37 cents.
Some store clerks said customers weren't happy with higher prices.
"We've tried to explain that the taxes are going to be going up, and we had a bunch a people come in a week ago and try to stock up on them," said sales associate Josh Marchant.
There is also a first-ever 10-percent tax on smokeless tobacco and an increase in the tax on cigars from 10-percent to 23-percent.
