UGA alums pulling money in Dooley dispute

June 28, 2003

(Athens-AP) -- 500 people have pulled their names from the University of Georgia's fund-raising list to show their disapproval of the university president not renewing the contract of Athletics Director Vince Dooley.

So far, more than 150 people have sent the school checks for 34 cents in support of a protest launched by Atlanta businessman John Withers.

The amount represents the jersey number of former football star Herschel Walker.

Walker resigned from the school's capital campaign steering committee in June when University of Georgia President Michael Adams announced he would not renew Dooley's contract.

University officials say they regret that the university is losing financial supporters -- but they are optimistic that the overall donations will remain on par with those in recent years.

The campaign's goal is to raise 500 (m) million dollars by 2007.
