(Waycross-AP) -- A motorist found an eight-year-old girl lying on the side of a road northeast of Waycross this morning after she had been abducted and sexually assaulted.
Authorities say an acquaintance of the girl's family, who lives within a half-mile of where she was found, was arrested on multiple charges, including kidnapping and rape.
Special Agent John Heinen of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the girl was abducted from a relative's home after she went to bed last night.
Police say 33-year-old Michael Strickland was arrested after questioning at the Ware County Sheriff's Office and is being held without bail. Strickland, who is on parole, has a record including convictions for motor vehicle theft and aggravated assault.
Police said the assault charges stemmed from two separate 1991 Glynn County cases in which three females, ages 14 to 19, were abducted after giving Strickland a ride.
