Valdosta- The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch until 5:00 PM Saturday afternoon for areas immediately downstream of the Lake Joree Millpond dam in northwest Valdosta in Lowndes County.

Heavy rainfall over the past few days has caused erosion in some locations of the millpond dam. Any additional significant rainfall of one half inch or greater in one hour or less may cause this dam to fail.

If failure occurs, a flood wave 3 feet deep will proceed downstream immediately affecting homes and other structures near the dam. This flood wave would drop to near one foot in depth downstream by the time it reaches Gornto Road and would continue to dissipate as it flows to the Withlacoochee River.

Affected streams along this path may include 2-mile branch and Sugar Creek. Jerry Jones Road has been closed and local law enforcement is monitoring the situation closely.

Residents in this area are urged to listen for later statements and follow the directions of the local authorities.
